Rockies split in Pittsburgh, now face Mets…
Sunday the Rockies escaped Pittsburgh with a much needed split of the 4 game series. I guess it’s true that “Every Rose Has It’s Thorn” as the song goes. The Rockies thorn is certainly the Pittsburgh Pirates over the past couple of years. and we can safely say that so far on this roadtrip the Rockies have at least tied the number of wins from their most recent roadtrip of 2-9. With a 2-2 record so far on this trip, they Rockies must now turn their attention to Citi Field and the Mets.
The Mets are a game under .500 at 55-56 in third place, half a game ahead of the Marlins and 8.5 games back of the division leading Braves. The Rockies also in third place in their division are only 6.5 games back of front runners San Diego and only a half game ahead of the Dodgers.
Will the Rockies finish this roadtrip over .500 at either 4-3 or 5-2? It’s possible, but the Rockies must give Ubaldo run support early tonight and allow him to work his magic on Mets hitters. Ubaldo has 18 strikeouts against the Mets over his last 29 innings. Carlos Gonzalez hopefully will continue his hot hitting as of late. Gonzalez was 9 for 18 in the 4 games at PNC Park against the Pirates, with 5 RBIs and 18 total bases.
Overall the Rockies have to play better as a team than they did in Pittsburgh if they are going to win the series against the Mets and remain in contention for a playoff spot. Tonight Ubaldo Jimenez (17-2) faces Mike Pelfrey (10-6).
