Rockies win again, closing in on Dodgers…
Jason Hammel was spectacular to say the least, striking out 8 in 7 1/3 innings. Hammel unfortunately left the game with a chance for the win, but Betancourt blew the save and almost the game. But the combination of Joe Beimel and Matt Daley held the Reds in check. Offensively in the 9th the Rockies were for the most part very patient. Barmes doubles and Giambi and Spilborghs both draw walks. Gonzalez strikes out and with the bases loaded Seth Smith fires a line drive to the 2nd baseman Brandon Phillips who was unable to make any sort of play that allowed the Rockies to score 2 runs to win their 6th in a row.
The Rockies are now 4 games up on the Giants in the NL Wildcard race and more importantly 2.5 games behind the division leading Dodgers.
The Rockies go for the sweep this afternoon of the Reds with Jose Contreras (6-13, 5.19) taking the hill against former Rockies itcher Kip Wells (1-3, 4.85). Contreras got his first win in a Rockies uniform in his last outing against the D’backs.
